A CONTRAST (Luke 18:9-14)

DOES NOT THE GAUDILY DECORATED WHEEL

KNOW ITS USEFULNESS

DEPENDS ON THE HUMBLE AXLE

DOES NOT THE ARROGANT PHARISEE

DRESSED IN HIS FINERY

TO GOD’S BLESSING ON HIM FOR A GOOD LIFE

OR DRESSED IN SHABBY CLOTHES

TO SHOW HOW HE SUFFERS FOR GOD

THAT HE IS TELLING GOD HOW GOOD HE IS

DOES NOT THE NOBLE PHARISEE

DESPISE THE LOWLY TAX COLLECTOR

PRAYING WITH HEAD DOWN

AND MUMBLING

BE MERCIFUL TO ME A SINNER

DOES NOT THE PROUD PHARISEE

LEAVE THE TEMPLE SELF SATISFIED

AND EMPTY

DOES NOT THE TAX COLLECTOR LEAVE

EMPTY OF SIN

AND AT PEACE

FRANK A VOLLMER
